US Squash has officially announced the 2007 US Squash Scholar-Athlete Awards, given to high school scholar-athletes who achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher during the 2006-2007 school year and an end-of-season squash ranking by competing in at least four sanctioned tournaments.
This year’s 78 award recipients are scholar-athletes who attend public, private and boarding schools in 13 different states. These scholar-athletes reflect a wide range of squash levels as demonstrated by their rankings, which ranged from No. 1 to No. 89.
“It is quite an achievement to be designated an outstanding athlete in this sport and an outstanding high school student in the classroom,” states Vijay Chitnis, Director of National Teams, Events and Junior Squash. He added, “Our award program has grown from 47 [awards] granted in the first year of 2006, and now 78 in the second. We would like to encourage more high school student-athletes who play squash to apply for the 2008 award.”
