Squash Professionals Finding Success Outside of the Club
Charlie Johnson, Bay Club, San Francisco, CA
Originally from Stortford, England, Charlie has been playing squash for seven years and has worked at the Bay Club for the past ten months. Aside from winning the 6.0 draw of the Bay Club Championships, Charlie also won the 6.0 draw of the Latitude 38 Group Open in September and the 6.0 draw at the Colonel Bud Thompson in December.
Kristen Lange, Pro Sports Club, Bellevue, WA.
Born in California and raised in Seattle, Kristen is a four-time first team All–American from the University of Pennsylvania. She is the former squash director at Access Youth Academy and has returned to Seattle to coach at the PSC and further pursue her pro tour career. She competed in the main draw at the 2013 U.S. Open Squash Championships, and she upset the top seed while reaching the semifinals at the Mercedes Benz of Scottsdale tournament in Arizona.
Grant White, Atlantic Coast Athletic Club, Charlottesville, VA
Grant was born one mile from the University of Virginia, where he has been coaching since 2011. He also coaches the middle school, boy’s junior varsity, boys’ varsity and girls’ varsity teams at Saint Anne’s Bellfield—a local prep school. Despite all of those commitments, Grant was able to capture the 5.0 title at the Charlottesville Squash Festival.
Alex Clark, Cynwyd Club, Bala Cywyd, PA
Alex has been coaching at the Cynwyd Club since 2011, coaching the junior programs, giving private lessons along with running the local public school programs—Harriton/Lower Merion and Bala Cynwyd/Welsh Valley. Along with partner Amy Gross, Alex made it all the way to finals of the Women’s draw at the 2013 U.S. Open Doubles Championships, as a qualifier.
John Musto, Princeton Club, New York, NY
Head pro at the Princeton Club for the past two years, this past November John won the 40+ Men’s Championship at the Milt Russ Invitational in New York and followed that up by taking the 6.0 crown at the Grand Open.
Joe Russell, Cleveland Racquet Club, Cleveland, OH
After an illustrious coaching career at Episcopal Academy, which saw him lead the suburban Philadelphia school to four consecutive U.S. High School Team Squash championships, Joe is now in his second year at the Cleveland Racquet Club. Originally from Portsmouth, England, Joe attained a level 3 Coaching certification there. A former 6.0 finalist at the U.S. Skill Level Championships, this past November Joe won the top division at the Cleveland Open.
Omar Sobhy, Metropolitan Club, Washington, DC
While playing at George Washington University, Sobhy was awarded GW’s Most Valuable Player for the 2011 and 2013 seasons and led the squash team to its highest ranking ever in 2012. He also won the 2011 Malloy Cup, making him the first individual intercollegiate champion in school history. Omar continued his winning ways by taking the title of the 5.0 division at the Charlottesville Squash Festival.
