The 2008-2009 squash season is well under way in Buffalo, NY. Saturday, Oct. 18, marked the official start as the annual Kick-Off team tournament was held at the Buffalo Tennis & Squash Club. Singles and doubles players of all levels competed throughout the afternoon, and the team captained by Julia Drury and Nelson Montgomery took the crown. Their cohorts included Marc Collard, John Cleary, Colin Forsyth, Liz Savino, Dan Drury, Kingman Bassett, and David Koehler. Two notable performances were turned in by Bill Reich, who battled through turf toe, and Matt Webb, who refused to succumb to dehydration. Following the matches, camaraderie replaced competitiveness, as the participants enjoyed cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and comedic tales told by our very own Gordie Anderson. The Buffalo squash community would like to thank Lynn Gates for her hard work in helping construct another successful Kick-Off Tourney.

Within the next six months much squash will be played in the Queen City. League play commences in November with the Buffalo Club looking to continue it’s recent singles dominance. The Buffalo Tennis & Squash Club’s Doubles Invitational in December has it’s deepest field ever thanks to the efforts and financial support of Kevin Hogan Esq. January is huge as the Buffalo contingent will travel to Pittsburgh in search of glory in the three city Knox Cup. Last year Buffalo finished a controversial second to Team Cleveland in a duel for the ages. March brings us the much anticipated Shamrock Tournament, which is orchestrated by the brothers Bill and John Cleary. The post tournament gala has evolved into a can’t miss event, and this year looks to be no different. The season wraps up in April with the City Finals at the historic Saturn Club. For the last five years Craig Rappaport has had a strangle hold on the “A” title, and his power, quickness, and vegan diet make him the clear favorite to claim his sixth trophy.

Lastly, gratitude and thanks must be delivered to last year’s Buffalo Squash President Peter Ahrens and this year’s fearless leader Mary Sellers Pici. Their enthusiasm, organization, and passion for the game have greatly elevated the Buffalo squash scene and contributed to the success of the adult and junior programs.
