WISPA Makes PAR

Screen Shot 2014-11-19 at 4.11.57 PMNo, the Women’s International Squash Players Association hasn’t been out promoting golf. Instead, for the first time in the history of women’s professional squash, WISPA is adopting Point-A-Rally scoring to 11—the same system adopted by the Men’s PSA tour three years  ago. As with the men, the scoring will be done such that at 10-all, games must be won by two clear points.

“After a 16 month period of testing, we have assured ourselves that ‘Pro Scoring’ will work well for our Tour,” said WISPA Chief Executive Andrew Shelley.

The move to Pro Scoring will begin on July 21 in the CIMB Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur.

As with the testing being done by the WSF, one of the key factors in moving to PAR scoring is that it is simple to understand by the uninitiated spectators and viewers—something considered to be critical to the sport’s Olympic aspirations.

“Pro Scoring has been very enthusiastically received at our trial events, so I’m excited that we have made the change,” said WISPA President Natalie Grainger. “I have no doubt that this is another step forward for women’s international squash.”

Changes to Scoring Format for Reports
In a further attempt at simplifying and clarifying the PAR-11 scoring system now being used by both the PSA and WISPA, the format for reporting the game scores was changed on June 1. When players reach 10-all, they play a tiebreaker until one is clear by two points. However, until now, a game that finished, for example, 16-14, would be reported as 11-10 (6-4). Now that game will be presented a 16-14, thereby eliminating any confusion.
