When Chris Walker made his spectacular run to the finals of the British Open as a qualifier in 2001, while knocking on the door of his 34th birthday, one might expect that he’d sit back in his rocking chair and rest his weary bones. Why not? He’d played seven matches to get to the final and then promptly went up two-games-to-one on David Palmer before finally succumbing.

But Walker isn’t one to sit still, and he’s spent the past several years as a private coach and US Men’s National Team Coach. He has also been very involved in Surf City Squash in San Diego, the city’s Urban Squash program. Now, in an attempt to raise $100,000, Walker will be running the San Diego Marathon on June 1, 2008. Currently, Surf City is a three-day program each week supporting 18 kids who spend equal time on academics and squash. The fundraising campaign is aimed at building the program to support double the number of kids next year.

To learn more, visit the Surf City website (surfcitysquash.org) and click on “events.” There you’ll be able to follow Walker’s progress and make a donation of your own. You can also send email to chriswalker@surfcitysquash.org to offer assistance by either running the marathon with him or simply making a donation.

We’ll keep you posted on Walker’s progress.
